This breakthrough survey of European users of Energy Trading, Transaction and Risk Management (ETRM) software was conducted by UtiliPoint International, Inc. during November and December, 2006 and January 2007, and fifty valid responses to the survey instrument were collected. The fifty responses include a variety of ETRM users and recommending companies across the broader European Union. Responses were obtained either by interview or by completion of an internet-based version of the questionnaire.
Based on the results and analysis of the survey, there is as yet no single dominant supplier in European markets. Instead it is a 3- 5 horse race with OpenLink, SunGard Energy, Global Energy, Allegro and home-grown systems dominating. Other vendors are also well known including Triple Point, Sakonnet Technology, Navita and Murex and a small number of European vendors have brand recognition including those mentioned above, such as VIZ Risk Management, IRM (recently acquired by OpenLink) and Microgen. However, it is the total number of vendors and products ‘known’ by the respondents that is somewhat surprisingly large combined with the mention of vendors who do not provide ETRM software, defunct vendors and older products that, in part, suggests that this is a more immature market than North America.
